Crockett’s Bill Aims for Transparency in Immigration Flights

Representative Jasmine Crockett, a progressive Democrat from Texas, is taking steps to challenge President Donald Trump’s tough stance on illegal immigration. She’s introduced a new piece of legislation meant to increase transparency regarding federal flights linked to immigration enforcement.

The bill, dubbed the “Transparency Requirements for Airlines to Know Immigration Acts and Enforcement Laws,” or the TRACK ICE Act, was presented this week in collaboration with New York’s Rep. Dan Goldman, another Democrat noted for his confrontations with Trump.

This new law aims to simplify the tracking of federal detention and deportation flights while mandating clear disclosures regarding those being detained.

Crockett, in her statement about the legislation, voiced concerns, stating, “For too long, the federal government has operated immigration flights without full transparency. These ghost flights have torn families apart, left loved ones in the dark, and given immigration authorities free rein without oversight, transparency, or justice. It’s Congress’s job to ensure the government does not operate above the law.”

This initiative comes as Democrats are calling for stricter oversight on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following recent violent protests in Minneapolis. The unrest was fueled by the shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, who was allegedly obstructing ICE operations at the time, although Democrats argue that the shooting by an ICE officer was reckless and warrants investigation.

The proposed legislation mandates that ICE or Customs and Border Protection (CBP) disclose inbound flight information within 72 hours before departure. The public will have access to specifics like aircraft ID codes, flight times, and mission designations, along with details about detainees, including nationality, age group, gender, and family connections.

While critics caution that too much transparency might jeopardize the safety of both ICE agents and those they interact with, proponents argue that the agency has operated with too much autonomy.

The number of deportation flights has surged by 44% under the Trump administration, reflecting significant changes in immigration enforcement practices.
