Hearing Tensions Rise Between Rep. McIver and ICE Director
During a hearing on Tuesday, Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey questioned Todd Lyons, the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), about his leadership. Specifically, she bluntly asked whether he believed he would go to hell for it.
This exchange came amid serious charges against McIver, who was indicted in May for allegedly assaulting a law enforcement officer during a political stunt at an ICE facility. During the homeland security hearing, she pointed fingers at Lyons for deaths she attributed to his agency. This assertion drew a rebuke from the committee’s chairman, Republican Rep. Andrew Garbarino of New York, who emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum.
“Do you think Judgment Day will go well with so much bloodshed?” McIver asked Lyons.
In response, Lyons said he wouldn’t engage with her questions. “Oh, okay, of course not,” McIver retorted. “Do you think you’re going to hell, Mr. Lyons?” Again, he chose not to reply.
Garbarino intervened, reminding the committee of the need for respectful debate. He noted that while legislative disagreements happen, personal attacks on witnesses were unacceptable and against the tradition of the committee.
During her questioning, McIver brought up tragic incidents she blamed on the Trump administration, including the January shootings involving ICE and Border Patrol agents that resulted in two deaths.
Former U.S. Attorney Alina Haba stated that McIver had “assaulted, obstructed, and disrupted law enforcement” during her confrontation at the Delaney Hall Detention Center, alleging that she aimed to sabotage ICE operations under the pretense of conducting oversight.
McIver defended herself, arguing that the allegations were politically motivated and did not accurately reflect her behavior. It’s a tangled situation, with emotions running high on both sides.
