Escobar Critiques ICE Deployment as Government Shutdown Persists
Democratic Representative Veronica Escobar from Texas has voiced her concerns regarding the Trump administration’s decision to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to support the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) during the ongoing partial government shutdown, stating it is, in her opinion, completely unnecessary.
This move was hinted at by President Trump over the weekend, and by Monday, ICE agents had officially stationed themselves at over a dozen airports across the U.S. This came as TSA reported over 3,000 calls for assistance on both Saturday and Sunday. Reports indicated significant crowding, with wait times at various airports stretching beyond four hours.
Some Democrats have criticized the decision, arguing that additional support was indeed necessary to manage the situation. Escobar insisted, “He has no reason to do that.”
Representative Adelita Grijalva from Arizona expressed her disapproval as well, labeling it “a horrible, horrible idea that will only cause more problems.” However, it seems that some airports have experienced major improvements since the arrival of ICE officers.
Yet, Grijalva voiced her apprehension, questioning the preparedness of ICE officers to assist at TSA checkpoints. “When you think about it, I don’t see how they help calm people down,” she reflected. “If I were an international traveler, I wouldn’t want to come to the United States to do business with a poorly trained fraudulent agent.”
Interestingly, several social media videos showcased ICE officers distributing water to travelers, with many expressing appreciation for the efforts that aimed to alleviate the disruptions stemming from the shutdown.
In response to critics who argue that ICE agents lack the necessary training to support TSA, Tom Homan, the Border Secretary, defended the move. He pointed out that many ICE agents are already working at airports and are involved in various criminal investigations there.
He asserted, “ICE officers are highly trained,” during a CNN interview. He clarified, “ICE agents are already stationed at many airports across the country. They conduct a number of criminal smuggling investigations at airports.” He emphasized that trained ICE personnel could effectively manage security exits.
The partial government shutdown has now persisted for 42 days as Democrats continue to push for reforms concerning ICE. Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas accused Senate Democrats of wanting to restrict ICE officers, stating this was a reason for the long TSA lines.
