Military Orders and Political Speech: A Controversial Discussion
Rep. Adam Smith, from Washington, expressed his belief during a CNN interview that President Donald Trump may have issued military orders that were illegal. This comment came after a video appeared last week, featuring six Democratic Congress members urging military personnel to “reject illegal orders” from Trump. Notably, the video did not specify any particular orders.
In response to the video, the Department of the Army announced on Monday a formal investigation into Sen. Mark Kelly from Arizona, who was part of the video. Smith criticized this move, viewing it as an infringement on protected political expression. He posed a question to CNN host Boris Sanchez regarding whether Trump had indeed given illegal orders, as suggested by the video.
Smith remarked, “Yes, that’s right.” He continued, emphasizing that elected representatives should be able to share their opinions freely. He elaborated on his perspective, arguing that orders lacking legitimate justification—like those related to military strikes in the Caribbean—could be deemed illegal. He believed expressing such opinions was not only valid but necessary.
He added that those six individuals, who were elected to represent the public, shouldn’t face threats of legal action while exercising their First Amendment rights. “They have an obligation to stand up for their beliefs,” he stated.
Furthermore, Smith characterized the Army’s actions against Kelly as a broader threat to political discourse, comparing them to tactics seen in authoritarian regimes.
In another twist, Smith has indicated his belief that Trump has issued illegal orders. However, Sen. Elissa Slotkin, also featured in the video, expressed during an ABC interview that she was “not aware” of any such orders from the president.
Slotkin added, “As far as I know, I don’t know of anything illegal, but I’m sure there’s some legal gymnastics going on with these Caribbean strikes and everything related to Venezuela.” There seems to be some tension within the party regarding these allegations.
