Democrats Take Control of Miami with Eileen Higgins’ Mayoral Win

Eileen Higgins has clinched victory in the Miami mayoral election, marking a significant milestone for the Democrats in the city after almost three decades of Republican leadership.

The 61-year-old Higgins triumphed over Republican Emilio Gonzalez, who had the backing of Donald Trump, thus becoming the first Democratic mayor the city has seen since 1998, and notably the first woman to hold the position.

“Tonight, the people of Miami made history,” Higgins stated following the announcement of the results.

This victory was a setback for the Republicans nationwide, who had rallied behind Gonzalez, with many viewing the outcome as a reflection of how voters are responding to Trump’s second year in office.

Despite Republican endorsements from Trump and key figures like Senators Ted Cruz and Rick Scott, Higgins was favored to win, having previously led Gonzalez in the first round of an election held in November.

Interestingly, her victory comes in a city with a substantial Cuban population—a demographic that has historically leaned right—suggesting a shift that could pose challenges for Republicans as they look ahead to the 2026 midterm elections.

Parallel elections across the country, including the recent selection of far-left Zoran Mamdani as New York City’s mayor, indicate that voter sentiment may be reflecting dissatisfaction with the current administration. This is also evident in tighter-than-expected margins in other recent Republican victories.

Hispanic voters remain critical, often swinging between left and right, making the Miami race a point of interest for lawmakers nationwide as they gauge potential trends for the upcoming year.

Higgins, previously a Miami-Dade County commissioner representing Little Havana, campaigned heavily on issues like affordable housing, framing the Republican platform as hostile to immigrants—particularly Hispanics who constitute a major demographic in Miami and Florida overall.

In her own words, “I have never been more proud to be a Democrat. We live in the state of Florida, and we have people building cages instead of affordable housing for our residents,” she expressed prior to her historical victory.

Her campaign frequently highlighted her opposition to Trump, even distributing flyers featuring a photo of Gonzalez in a MAGA hat.

On the other hand, Gonzalez’s platform included eliminating property taxes and support for the Trump administration’s immigration policies, which adds further complexity to this electoral narrative.
