Senate Democrats Critique Cease-Fire Agreement with Iran

Senate Democrats are expressing skepticism regarding the recent cease-fire agreement involving Iran. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) labeled the situation as a “disaster.”

Tuesday night brought a collective exhale from the world as it was reported that Iran sought a cease-fire after President Donald Trump’s warning that civilization could be at risk, according to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. However, as negotiations continue and the Trump administration claims total victory, Senator Murphy appears unconvinced.

Murphy spoke about the implications of the cease-fire, saying, “This gives the Iranian leadership considerable advantage. We are now starting to see why Iran was so eager for this ‘ceasefire.'” He pointed out that Iran would gain control over the strait and sustain missile and nuclear programs, describing it as “What a disaster.”

Senator Blumenthal (D-Conn.) echoed similar sentiments, stating that while the ceasefire is a positive development, it’s primarily because the ongoing conflict needs to end as soon as possible. He noted, “The optimal time for a ceasefire would have been before the war even started. We’ve seen tens of billions wasted, thousands of lives lost, and a global economic crisis exacerbated.” He suggested that the situation reflects on a war that President Trump fails to adequately articulate, claiming that a ceasefire does not equate to victory for the American populace.

Senator Chris Coons (D-Delaware) expressed concerns that the agreement could worsen the U.S. economic landscape.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) also criticized President Trump, labeling him a “military idiot.”

Meanwhile, Hegseth proclaimed “a historic and overwhelming military victory” on Wednesday morning, suggesting that Iran had “begged” for the ceasefire. He credited President Trump’s “determination” for moving toward success against the Islamic State group. Hegseth highlighted various military actions taken, including the airstrike that killed General Soleimani, and emphasized the decisive operations negating Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He asserted that Trump has led with courage and determination, stating that U.S. control over the situation is paramount.
