Ossoff’s Campaign Funded by Out-of-State Donations

Senator Jon Ossoff, a Democrat from Georgia, is being called “the most endangered Senate Democrat” by some observers. His campaign promotes what it describes as a strong grassroots coalition. However, recent Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings reveal that a considerable portion of his funding comes from outside the state.

According to Ossoff’s latest quarterly report, over 80% of the funds he raised last year were from out-of-state donors. This report focuses on contributions of at least $200 and indicates that more than half of the maximum contributors hailed from California, New York, or the DC-Maryland-Virginia area.

In a news release following the October filings, Ossoff’s team revealed that he raised $12 million during the last third-quarter fundraising period, which spanned from July 1 to September 30. This achievement occurred despite substantial expenditures from Republican super PACs. The press release highlighted that Ossoff’s re-election fund is largely supported by smaller donations, averaging around $36, with a total of 233,000 contributors. Smaller contributions remain private if they are below the $200 threshold.

Concern Over Party Loyalty Amidst Fundraising Strategy

Ossoff’s re-election efforts come in a state that Trump won by a narrow 2-point margin in 2024. He assumed office in 2021 after narrowly defeating Republican incumbent David Perdue in a runoff. Interestingly, during his initial campaign, he garnered roughly 60% of his donations from outside Georgia, as noted by the Washington Free Beacon.

His recent October FEC filings show that California provided the most significant share of his donations in the third quarter, contributing about 20%. Georgia followed closely behind with nearly 17.5%.

However, according to data for donors who exceeded contribution limits, California (33.3%), New York (15.65%), and Massachusetts (10.8%) outpaced Georgia, where only 6.1% of such donors were located.

Republicans Aim for Senate Seat as Ossoff Faces Pressure

In light of Ossoff’s precarious position, Republican strategists argue that Georgia Democrats are unlikely to break from the party line, especially regarding government shutdown votes, fearing a backlash from liberal supporters nationwide.

Ryan Mahoney, a Georgia-based Republican strategist, pointed out that Ossoff faces a tough choice in significant decision-making moments. He stated, “He has no middle ground when it comes to the big decisions he has to make, and I think the government shutdown proves that.”

Another insider within the Democratic Party remarked, “His calculation is, ‘Do I vote to open up the government and not raise a single dollar in low-dollar funds, or do I shut it down and potentially raise $3 million from online fundraising?’”

Ossoff’s campaign did not provide any comment when approached regarding this situation.
