Magaziner’s Funding Claims Contradicted by Voting Record

Representative Seth Magaziner, a Democrat from Rhode Island, informed constituents that he had secured substantial federal funding for his district. However, vote counts examined reveal that he actually voted against the related funding measure.

Magaziner, who has served two terms and represents a Democratic-leaning area, emerged victorious in July after five amendments were incorporated into the annual House defense spending bill. Nevertheless, the Rhode Island Democratic Party later opposed the measure, which included an amendment allocating $39 million for coastal defense priorities.

“I am pleased that this year’s defense spending bill includes important priorities for the U.S. Navy and the Rhode Island workers who support our nation’s strong national defense,” Magaziner stated in a press release regarding the federal funding. “I fought for these amendments so Rhode Island can continue to lead in defense research, development, and innovation and make our nation safer.”

Interestingly, Magaziner did not mention his opposition to the defense spending bill during the House’s July plenary session, which largely saw party-line voting. Only five House Democrats supported the defense package while three Republicans opposed it.

Attempts to get comments from Magaziner’s office went unanswered.

The defense funding bill, which totals $831.5 billion, includes a 3.8% pay increase for military personnel, along with funding for various initiatives, including President Donald Trump’s missile defense system and anti-drug trafficking efforts.

The extensive bill also highlighted provisions credited to Magaziner, such as $13.3 million aimed at strengthening coastal defense and infrastructure and $10 million for upgrading submarine technology.

While Magaziner’s office emphasized the securing of amendments related to coastal defense, neither local media nor his office noted his “no” vote on the overarching bill.

The National Republican Congressional Committee criticized Magaziner, suggesting he falsely claimed credit for significant aspects of a bill he opposed. “Seth Magaziner is a complete and utter fraud. Instead of prioritizing his constituents, he chose to pander to the left,” said NRCC spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole. “Rhode Island deserves better.”

This is not the first time Magaziner has faced scrutiny regarding his voting record. In June 2024, he also claimed credit for various amendments in the Defense Policy Bill that he had opposed.

In a press release, his office pointed out that he successfully passed two amendments in a separate defense authorization act, yet failed to acknowledge his opposition to a provision within that bill that would limit taxpayer-funded travel for military personnel seeking abortions.
