Rep. Susie Lee’s Remarks Spark Controversy
Representative Susie Lee, a Democrat from Nevada, recently made some striking comments at the Suncity Liberal Club in Las Vegas. Known for her bipartisan approach, she expressed her desire to “work across the aisle,” but shortly after that, she revealed a rather aggressive sentiment toward Army Secretary Pete Hegseth, stating she wanted to “defeat him.”
Her comments surfaced while she was discussing rare earth minerals and her support for MP Materials, a Las Vegas-based company involved in crucial mineral production. These statements come amid her campaign for re-election in a tightly contested district.
“I want to be bipartisan. I want to work across the aisle,” Lee expressed to the audience. However, as she talked about Hegseth’s testimony, she added, “Now listen, it’s so easy. It’s so easy. You just want to beat him.”
In a more colorful phrase, Lee remarked on the urge to “beat the s— out” of Hegseth while addressing the challenges surrounding the Army chief at a hearing.
Lee’s remarks aren’t without precedent. Earlier, Hegseth faced criticism over prior comments directed at her. Following a late-night social media uproar regarding a post aimed at Trump, Lee defended her views, indicating she was “unnerved” by what she called an attack on the Constitution.
Her spokesperson noted that Hegseth’s actions have made life more challenging and expensive for Americans. “The war he and President Trump have started has raised gas and food prices, which puts a strain on working families,” the spokesperson stated. They argued that Lee has diverging views from Hegseth.
During her talk, Lee stressed concerns about the Pentagon prioritizing investments in an Australian firm over her homegrown U.S. company. “You have to ignore their egos, right?” she quipped while reflecting on the investment in MP Materials, which eventually attracted a $2 billion deal from the Pentagon. “I didn’t want to go easy on Hegseth, but you know, you gotta do what you gotta do to get the job done, right?”
Lee’s comments have stirred debate among Republicans who see them as contradictory to her claims of bipartisanship. Critics argue that her private comments reveal a different narrative. Mark Bednar, a former communications director for ex-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, remarked on the troubling implications of Lee’s comments within the broader context of American politics.
Meanwhile, some Republicans have contested Lee’s assertion that her interactions had any bearing on the Pentagon’s investments, labeling her statements as exaggerated attempts to bolster her bipartisan image.
MP Materials ultimately secured a significant agreement with the Department of Defense that involved a $400 million investment, positioning the federal government as the company’s largest shareholder and enhancing the U.S. rare earth magnet supply chain.
