Protests Erupt Near Chicago Immigration Facility

On Friday, protesters gathered again outside a US immigration and customs processing facility in Broadview, Illinois, near Chicago. The atmosphere in the Metro area is escalating as the Trump administration’s Operation Midway Blitz intensifies its efforts in the region.

Similar to the previous week, demonstrators obstructed road access to the facility, prompting ICE’s special response team and Border Patrol agents to manage crowd control to facilitate vehicle movement.

Reportedly, one protester threw a tear gas canister, while another allegedly detained him, allowing an agent to escape.

Two notable figures among the agitators were Daniel Biss and Kat Abugazare, who are competing to replace Jan Shakowski (D-Il.), who is resigning from Illinois’ 9th Congressional District. Biss currently serves as the mayor of Evanston, while Abugazare has a background with the left-leaning media watchdog group Media Issues for America.

A video shared by Biss showed him actively trying to block federal vehicles from leaving the facility, putting his body in the way. In response, federal agents employed tear gas and pepper spray to clear the roads.

“We will—we’re not intimidated,” Biss asserted in the video posted online.

Abugazare also posted a video capturing an incident early in the morning, where federal agents retreated from her position after she refused to budge. At one point, she slipped and made a loud noise as she fell.

“This feels like a violation of our First Amendment rights by ICE,” she exclaimed.

She continued, “What happened to me was an extreme abuse of power, and it’s still nothing compared to what they are doing to the immigrant community. I’m advocating for rights as a journalist, and now Congress is following suit in DC,” before linking to her campaign for donations.

The Department of Homeland Security did not offer any comments before publication.

Unlike the previous protest covered by Blaze News, federal agents on Friday moved two protesters into custody. One of them reportedly threw a tear gas canister, and the other was arrested while assisting an agent’s escape.
