Stephanie Shaheen, a Democratic candidate for Congress in New Hampshire’s first district, failed to denounce political violence during a recent interview.
The daughter of US Senator Jeanne Shaheen, she was recorded on video sidestepping questions about condemning political violence.
When asked directly, she simply replied, “I hope you have a great night.”
Undeterred, the questioner pressed on: “Do you think we need to lower our rhetoric? Do you denounce political violence? It seems like a straightforward question.”
“Is murder wrong because of politics? Is murder unacceptable?” Despite the continued questioning, Shaheen remained silent.
She eventually walked away in silence, entering her car and shutting the door.
Maureen O’Toole, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), commented that Shaheen’s lack of response is not just radical but also poses a danger, stating, “Shaheen has contributed to rising political tensions and isn’t suited to represent granite state interests in Congress.”
Shaheen, who previously served on the Portsmouth city council, announced her congressional run in May. Her refusal to tackle these basic questions comes on the heels of the shocking public assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who had been speaking at an event at Utah Valley University.
Additionally, this incident follows closely after a shooting at an Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas, Texas, where it was reported that at least one bullet had an “anti-ICE” marking.
Her refusal to denounce political violence is particularly notable as Democratic Senator John Fetterman recently highlighted research indicating that left-wing terrorism has reached a “thirty-year high” and criticized fellow Democrats for their inflammatory rhetoric, often invoking terms like “Hitler” or “fascists.”
