Democratic Donors Oppose Trump by Contributing Heavily to John Cornyn's Campaign Following Trump's Support of Ken Paxton

Political Maneuvering in Texas Senate Race

Following President Trump’s endorsement of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Republican Senator John Cornyn has attracted donations from both Democrats and some Republicans who previously voted for Trump’s impeachment. This surprising shift highlights the intense dynamics of the current political landscape in Texas.

On May 19, Trump voiced his support for Paxton in a post on Truth Social, declaring him a “true MAGA warrior” dedicated to serving Texas and expressing confidence in his capability to represent the state in the U.S. Senate. Trump affirmed his endorsement by stating, “I fully and completely support Ken Paxton to be the next U.S. senator from Texas. Ken Paxton will never let you down!”

Despite Trump’s backing of Paxton, Texas Senate Republicans have committed to advancing Cornyn’s re-election efforts. Remarkably, just a day after the endorsement, Cornyn raised nearly $150,000, drawing support from donors known for their contributions to anti-Republican, anti-Trump initiatives, including the Never Trump Lincoln Project.

One notable donor, Suffolk Construction’s CEO Josh Fish, contributed $3,500. Suffolk had previously faced scrutiny for improper donations to a pro-Hillary Clinton super PAC while securing government contracts, leading to a significant fine by federal election authorities.

Brett Kappel, a political finance expert, commented on the implications of such contributions, noting they often reflect broader concerns associated with pay-to-play laws. He explained that making donations as a contractor runs counter to legal expectations, regardless of the project’s context.

Jason Rose from Atlas Venture also entered the fray with a $1,000 donation and has financially supported Republicans, including Senator Bill Cassidy, who voted for Trump’s impeachment. Cassidy’s donor list coincidentally includes many Democrats, raising questions about the bipartisan nature of campaign financing in this contentious climate.

In a statement reflecting the internal Republican divide, Lone Star Liberty PAC spokesperson Greg Keller remarked on the irony of Cornyn’s actions after Trump’s endorsement. Keller implied that Cornyn’s reliance on Democratic funds shows a departure from his supposed commitment to MAGA principles.

A spokesperson from Cornyn’s campaign retorted, pointing to Paxton’s financial backing from “left-wing trial lawyers,” suggesting that the funding landscape is more complex than it first appears.
