Democratic governors refuse to say how old is too old for 2028 nominee

In several conversations with The New York Times, prominent Democratic governors have cast a wide range of age concerns on 2028 Democratic presidential candidates, as concerns about President Biden's age and mental health disrupt his re-election efforts. He declined to say whether there should be any limits.

California Governor Gavin Newsom: “This is not a time in life, it's a state of mind.'' told the New York Times. It would be “absurd” to suggest that there be any specific limits on it. Mr. Newsom has said that Mr. Biden's age will not be a problem in 2023.

With a few exceptions, Democrats generally defended Biden against attacks on his age and ability to perform in office ahead of his wild debate performance against Donald Trump in June. About a month after the debate, Biden withdrew from the race. His potential successor, Vice President Kamala Harris, lost the election to Trump.

“When I was a kid, most people who were 65 were dead,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said. “I'm 65 years old. I'm not ready to die yet.”

“There is no age test,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said. “The question is, are you in the game? We have a great bench and we have a lot of different age groups on the bench.”

The Times report noted that the Democratic governors they spoke to were hesitant to criticize the president.

When asked if there should be an age limit for 2028 candidates, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said, “No.” Other Democrats did not hesitate to say that Biden was unable to carry out their message.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D.N.J.) said, “While he may have had health issues, he was not the person who could forcefully convey the message we need in a difficult election cycle.'' Ta. he told the outlet. She said she is positive about the 2028 Democratic presidential candidates among Gen Xers.
