Connecticut Representative Arrested for Shoplifting
A Democratic representative from Connecticut found himself in a bit of trouble recently. He was arrested for shoplifting after failing to scan some items at a Target self-checkout. He offered several explanations, saying he was “hurried to carry items to his grandmother in the hospital.”
The incident occurred Monday night at the Target store in Bethel, which is approximately 60 miles southwest of Hartford. State Assemblyman Raghib Ally Brennan was taken into custody by loss prevention staff.
After the arrest, he mentioned to officers that he recognized four terms of lawmakers from “previously unreported theft.” It seems he was reflecting on his past, perhaps suggesting this wasn’t his first encounter with the law, though it wasn’t quite clear.
Brennan, 33, who was first elected back in 2018, acknowledged the situation on his Facebook page, where he shared his thoughts the following day.
In his post, he explained, “During my recent visit to Bethel’s Target, two items I was carrying were not scanned. I quickly brought the items to my grandmother in the hospital, and there were no bags in the store, so I was juggling multiple purchases.” It kind of makes you wonder, right? It sounds hectic.
He went on to say, “I have no records, but I take full responsibility for the error and am working through legal procedures to resolve the issue promptly and respectfully.” There’s something to be said for owning up to mistakes, I guess.
He added, “I respect the laws and the rights of the targets to implement their loss prevention policies, and I continue to rely on serving our community with transparency and integrity.” A bit formal, perhaps, but you can see his intention to maintain some credibility.
Connecticut State Speaker Matt Ritter also commented on the situation, expressing concern about the incident involving his party member. He stated, “He is aware of the high standards I hold members to, and he’s responsible for mistakenly leaving the self-checkout without scanning some items.” It’s clear that this has raised eyebrows.
Interestingly, Brennan did not respond to inquiries following the event, which leaves one curious about his next steps.
