Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman of New York said former President Trump was “the only reason” the bipartisan deal between the U.S. and Mexico fell apart.
During an appearance on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360°” on Tuesday, Goldman said the only reason Republican senators are abandoning the bipartisan border agreement is because of President Trump’s pressure in the Senate. Trump said he would use that pressure to further his advantage in his 2024 campaign.
“Senate Republicans are now tearing up this bipartisan agreement they reached with the president and Senate Democrats, and that’s because Donald Trump told Republicans he wanted to get into the chaos and give Joe Biden policies in an election year.” “This is because we directed them not to give us a victory on the border,” Goldman said Tuesday night. “The only reason this has gone off the rails is because Donald Trump doesn’t want the Republican Party to solve our problems. He wants to prolong the problem so he can use it for campaigning. thinking.”
The former president has railed against the border agreement, arguing that it weakens the border and is unnecessary. He did receive pushback from some Republican senators.
“We don’t need a border bill to stop millions of people pouring into our country, including people from prisons and psychiatric hospitals around the world. It’s an invasion like no other. It’s not sustainable or affordable, and it’s only going to get worse under crooked Joe Biden,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Negotiations on both sides are working to flesh out the final details of the bill.
Goldman accused Republicans of “politicizing” the issue and characterized the rhetoric as another step in Republicans’ view of bipartisan legislation as unnecessary.
“Republicans have now realized that trying to politicize this issue and undermine a comprehensive bipartisan solution is bad,” Goldman said. “They’re going to move on to the next point, which is, oh, we don’t need a law to do this. Well, that’s certainly very different from everything they’ve been saying throughout this Congress. And that is different from the reality on the ground.”
Over the weekend, President Trump said he doesn’t mind being held accountable if the southern border deal fails, suggesting the bill would be “a disaster waiting to happen.”
“As the leader of our party, there is zero chance that I would support this horrific opening of borders,” Trump told supporters on Saturday. “I will fight to the end. Many of the senators, with all due respect, are trying to say it’s my fault. It’s okay, I say. Blame it on me. Please. .”
