Democratic Leaders Congratulate Zohran Mamdani on Primary Win
The top Democrats in Congress, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, tweeted on Wednesday about a forthcoming meeting with Zohran Mamdani, a socialist nominee from New York City who recently triumphed in the Democratic primary.
“Congratulations to Zohran Mamdani on his decisive major victory. Councillor Mamdani has focused intently on economic issues and has initiated an impactful campaign to address the high cost of living in New York City,” Jeffries tweeted.
Schumer added that he had a conversation with Mamdani and expressed eagerness to meet soon. “I spoke with Zohran Mamdani and look forward to getting together this morning,” he tweeted.
Schumer also highlighted their past collaboration. In 2021, the duo released a video showcasing their support for taxi drivers in NYC and organized a protest against a proposed power plant in Queens earlier that year.
“I know Zohran because we worked together to provide debt relief to many struggling taxi drivers and campaigned against the proposed gas facility in Astoria. He has conducted an impressive campaign that resonates with New Yorkers on themes of affordability, fairness, and opportunity,” Schumer wrote in a tweet.
Mamdani’s victory came as he topped former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, securing more than 43% of the first-choice votes in the city’s ranked voting system, while Cuomo received around 36%.
Self-identified democratic socialists like Mamdani have proposed initiatives such as minimum wages of $30, city-operated grocery stores, free public transportation, and cuts to police overtime budgets. Previously, he has also supported police refunds and participated in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement aimed at reducing support for Israeli businesses from U.S. consumers.
