Minnesota Democrats Target Gun Control through City Councils

Democrats in Minnesota are looking to leverage city councils to advance gun control measures after Governor Tim Walz (D) couldn’t gain enough support in the legislature for a special convention on the matter.

Following the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School on August 27, 2025, Walz advocated for a ban on “assault weapons,” criticizing Republican lawmakers for not holding votes on gun bans, calling it “unacceptable.”

Despite his efforts, Republicans have remained steadfast in their opposition. In response, Walz suggested a state-level constitutional amendment on gun control, but that idea did not materialize.

Now, according to Post Bulletin, Democratic leaders in Congress plan to initiate town halls across the state, aiming to rally support for gun control initiatives.

“Polling consistently shows that a majority of Minnesotans are in favor of things like banning high-capacity magazines and assault weapons,” stated Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL). She noted that such polling indicates support for gun control is “in the late 50s to early 60s among Minnesotans who affirm, ‘Yes, that’s the right approach.’

However, Murphy did not specify which polls confirm this strong backing for banning the AR-15, a widely popular rifle in America.
