Democratic Minnesota state senator stripped of committee assignments after burglary arrest

Democratic Minnesota Sen. Nicole Mitchell has been removed from her committee assignments and caucus following her arrest last week on suspicion of burglary at her stepmother’s home.

Senate Democratic Leader Erin Murphy released a statement obtained. FOX9 Minneapolis, He said the situation was tragic, but “there are still questions to be answered.”

“While this case is under review in both the Senate and the courts, Sen. Mitchell will be relieved of his committee assignments and removed from his caucus,” Murphy said.

Mitchell was arrested by police at his stepmother’s home in the early hours of Monday morning and charged with first-degree robbery on Tuesday. Mitchell denies the charges, insisting he was just checking on a sick loved one.

Mitchell admitted to breaking in through a window and told investigators he was trying to get his deceased father’s remains, photographs, a flannel shirt and other items of sentimental value, according to a criminal complaint. That’s what it means. Ms. Mitchell claimed that her stepmother stopped speaking to her after her father’s death and refused to give her items.

Mitchell, a Woodbury native, has been representing the 47th District since being elected to the state Senate in 2022. He was previously a meteorologist for KSTP-TV and Minnesota Public Radio and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard.
