Democratic Representative LaMonica McIver faces charges related to a disorderly protest at the Newark ICE detention center, while Mayor Ras Baraka has been let go.

Charges Against Rep. Lamonica McIver

Rep. Lamonica McIver (D-NJ) is set to face criminal charges following her actions during an incident outside the Newark Immigration Detention Center earlier this month.

On Monday, New Jersey U.S. Attorney Alina Haba announced that McIver has been accused of violating Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 111(a)(1), which pertains to assaulting and obstructing law enforcement.

McIver was among several Democratic figures present at a protest outside the Delaney Hall detention center on May 9. This event escalated, leading to the arrest of Democratic Mayor Ras Baraka, who reportedly trespassed on a facility contracted with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Haba mentioned that every opportunity was given for McIver to resolve the matter without criminal charges. “I did try to address these issues without taking legal action,” Haba said. “But, unfortunately, she declined.”

“No one is above the law, whether you’re a politician or not,” Haba asserted, emphasizing the office’s commitment to justice. “Now we’re making the judicial system work.”
