A coalition of Democrats is requesting a federal inquiry into the possibility that the Trump administration is leveraging trade talks with international entities to favor Elon Musk’s Starlink venture.
On Wednesday, Attorney General Pam Bondy, along with Jamieson Greer of the Government Ethics Office and others, highlighted concerns regarding recent activities. According to a report from the Washington Post, the US Embassy and the State Department suggested that efforts should be made to streamline processes for satellite companies, frequently mentioning Starlink specifically.
The report indicated that although Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not explicitly demand benefits for Starlink, he has been encouraging officials to expedite regulatory approvals for satellite ventures while the White House aims for broader trade discussions.
A letter spearheaded by Senate Banking Committee member Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and signed by others expressed that it seems foreign nations may consider adopting Starlink services in exchange for tariff concessions, suggesting a concerning pattern of corruption.
This letter was released as President Trump embarked on his first overseas trip during his second term, where he was accompanied by Musk, who is serving as a senior adviser.
The senators pointed out that both Trump and Musk were present in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday when Musk announced Starlink’s approval within the country, coinciding with a new defense and trade agreement from the White House.
Concerns were raised regarding the challenges other satellite companies face in securing operational permits, while Musk’s Starlink has achieved swift approvals in various markets since Trump took office.
“Reports suggest that Musk may be exploiting his relationship with the president for personal financial gain. These actions warrant scrutiny over potential ethical violations or breaches of law,” the letter stated.
Oka reached out for comments from both the White House and Starlink.
