Ocasio-Cortez’s Vote Draws Criticism from Left
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York representative, has come under fire from progressives after her recent vote on an amendment concerning U.S. funding for Israel’s Iron Dome.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are opposing a $500 million allocation in Congress’ defense spending bill intended to support missile defense systems. Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized left-leaning lawmakers for voting against her amendment.
Greene stated, “An arms embargo signifies protecting all weaponry from the Genocide Forces. There are no exceptions. This is why I oppose Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.” The DSA remarked over the weekend that they voted against Greene’s amendment, which sought to block the funding for the Iron Dome.
Furthermore, they expressed that Ocasio-Cortez’s vote against the broader defense funding bill essentially amounted to a vote in favor of, as they put it, “the imperialist military industrial complex and funding the Israeli genocide.”
Yet, the DSA noted they were particularly disappointed by her stated position on the Iron Dome and asserted that systems like it have enabled Israel to engage in military actions against multiple countries over the last couple of years.
The DSA conveyed frustration that Ocasio-Cortez seems to recognize what they categorize as genocide, expressing that it diminishes her support for military aid. They encouraged allies to maintain their stance on funding issues related to the Iron Dome, regardless of whether it’s grouped with other defense measures.
Meanwhile, the DSA commended other representatives, such as Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Al Green, for opposing the amendment.
After her vote, Ocasio-Cortez took to social media, clarifying her position: “The Marjorie Taylor Greene fix won’t eliminate offensive aid to Israel or stop U.S. ammunition used in Gaza. Obviously, I voted against it.” She elaborated, stating that the amendment would restrict defensive capabilities while allowing lethal weaponry to persist, a situation she finds troubling.
Furthermore, she reiterated her focus on decreasing U.S. ammunition that contributes to violence in Gaza, emphasizing that this represents a fundamental difference in views.
This recent altercation underscores a broader ideological rift within the Democratic Party, particularly regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Ocasio-Cortez has faced backlash from the progressive community due to perceptions that she hasn’t taken an adequately strong position on Israel. In 2021, she expressed deep emotions after Democratic colleagues voted to fund the Iron Dome defense system, acknowledging her tears for the human toll those decisions bear.
The recent bill passed last week includes a large $83.2 billion for defense funding for the upcoming fiscal year. This outlines specific utilizations of funds, separate from the National Defense Authorization Act, which sets forth policies regarding national security and defense for each fiscal cycle.
Greene’s amendment, aiming to cut $500 million for the Israeli missile defense program, ultimately failed with a decisive 6-422 vote.
