Letitia James Responds to Federal Criminal Charges
New York Attorney General Letitia James has claimed that the recent bank fraud charges against her are part of an effort by President Donald Trump to carry out “political retribution at all costs.”
In a striking development, a federal grand jury in Virginia has indicted James on charges related to bank fraud and providing false information to a financial institution. The indictment outlines claims that James misrepresented her purchase of a home in Norfolk to secure favorable loan terms, which she rented out afterward. She has firmly denied any wrongdoing, calling the charges “political retaliation.”
James stated, “These accusations are baseless, and the president’s public remarks reveal that his sole aim is political retaliation.” Her long-standing rivalry with Trump includes a previous civil lawsuit she filed against his business, which resulted in a nearly $500 million judgment against him.
The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Lindsay Harrigan, indicated that James could face up to 30 years in prison for each charge along with fines and possible forfeiture. Harrigan emphasized, “No one is above the law. The charges indicate intentional criminal conduct and a serious breach of the public trust.” She assured that they would pursue the matter diligently to serve justice.
Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik criticized James, alleging she is misusing her position to target Trump and his associates. “Her hypocrisy is clear,” Stefanik argued, noting that James campaigned on the notion that “no one is above the law,” yet now faces similar charges she’s leveled against others.
Meanwhile, other politicians have rallied in support of James. Rep. Richie Torres decried the indictment as an abuse of power while highlighting Trump’s focus on personal vendettas instead of pressing issues affecting everyday Americans. Rep. Jerry Nadler and New York Governor Cathy Hochul echoed similar sentiments, condemning the situation as government weaponization.
In a bold statement, New York mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani praised James as a “defender of justice,” asserting that Trump is undermining democracy with his actions. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described the scenario as a disturbing manifestation of tyranny, stating that Trump is targeting James “for the crime of indicting and winning fraud charges.”
Rep. Jasmine Crockett also criticized the indictment, labeling it a “political weaponization of the court,” indicating the risks those face when standing up against corruption. James is scheduled to appear in court on October 24 in Norfolk, Virginia.
