Democrats Anxious as New Jersey Governor's Race Tightens

Concerns for Democrats Grow in New Jersey Ahead of Gubernatorial Race

As the gubernatorial race heats up in New Jersey, anxiety is rising among Democrats. Recent data suggests that Republicans are benefiting early from mail-in voting ahead of the November election.

This week’s updated figures reveal that more Republican votes have been returned than Democratic ones for the first time in the current election cycle. This trend appears to bolster the campaign of Rep. Mikie Sherrill against former state legislator Jack Ciattarelli.

Election analyst Michael Pruiser notes that 18.6% of mail-in votes returned so far are from Republicans, compared to 16.6% from Democrats and 9.3% from other parties. While Democrats still make up a majority of mail-in ballots at around 62.3%, the increased return rate for Republicans is striking, especially considering that they trailed Democrats in early voting during 2024.

According to Axios, national Democrats are starting to question Sherrill’s performance, revealing growing concern that they could lose in typically blue states. Several strategists have indicated that Sherrill’s campaign is facing setbacks and has an unclear message, despite significant financial backing from national party resources.

Some insiders have mentioned that Sherrill, a former Navy pilot with a history of serving in Congress, may not translate well on the campaign trail. They describe her as overly scripted and lacking focus on pressing issues like rising costs, as well as being too reliant on Washington staff instead of local operatives. For instance, Eileen Lynn, a strategist not directly involved, suggested Sherrill needs a clearer message beyond just spending heavily on the campaign and highlighting her past experiences.

Internal party criticisms have surfaced since Sherrill faced scrutiny regarding her financial dealings. When questioned about her family’s wealth in May, her hesitant response raised eyebrows, particularly after reports indicated she made $7 million through stock transactions. This scrutiny intensified when her campaign launched a website targeting Ciattarelli, emphasizing financial gains.

Another complication arose when Sherrill struggled to name a specific law during an interview. A pro-Ciattarelli Super PAC also aired an ad featuring her remarks, which appeared to mock clean energy initiatives while she was critiquing her party’s messaging.

A spokesperson from the Republican Governors Association refrained from addressing the context of Sherrill’s remarks directly and instead issued criticism regarding her stance on energy issues. In response, her campaign asserted that she has consistently focused on economic challenges faced by New Jersey families, with her campaign manager claiming she has prioritized affordability since the beginning.

Meanwhile, Ciattarelli is making strides in reaching out to working-class and minority voters, showing concern for gaining traction within traditionally Democratic communities. Both candidates have launched advertisements that tackle high utility costs, with Ciattarelli advocating for tax cuts and energy reform, while Sherrill emphasizes clean energy initiatives.

Recent polling from Emerson College shows both candidates at 43% support, with 11% of voters still undecided. This mirrors results from late September and underscores the competitiveness of the race, particularly in light of Joe Biden’s decisive win in 2020.

The race has also brought attention to Sherrill’s past at the US Naval Academy, where she faced backlash for her refusal to identify a classmate involved in a scandal, ultimately preventing her graduation in 1994. Her supporters argue that this incident is being misrepresented by opponents and defend her military service record. There are also questions regarding potential conflicts of interest related to her children attending the academy.

Ciattarelli is using these controversies to underscore themes of transparency and accountability, gaining from the growing momentum among Republicans discontented with the current state leadership. His campaign is focused on tax cuts, support for law enforcement, and addressing economic issues across New Jersey.

Grassroots organizers stress the importance of voter turnout, emphasizing that for Republicans, success hinges on maximizing participation, both early and on Election Day. They highlight the narrow margins in past contests, urging voters to utilize early voting and mail-in options to avoid complications on Election Day.
