Democrats are trapped in their harmful reliance on Trump

Democrats can’t escape their toxic co-dependency with Trump

There’s an argument that Democrats should just rebrand themselves as the “not Trump” party. It seems more genuine, given that for nearly a decade, their primary unifying force has been a shared disdain for the former president.

This approach doesn’t seem sustainable, and honestly, it’s puzzling, especially since he has already faced defeat in two elections.

Some within the party are aware there’s a problem brewing, but they’ve labeled it as mere messaging issues. You often hear complaints about how losing candidates tend to focus on their language and use of new-age media like podcasts. Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, seems to be on board with this thinking, even eyeing a potential presidential run.

Meanwhile, the party’s energy is predominantly directed at opposing Trump. This sentiment is echoed in mainstream media, which reports an overwhelmingly negative portrayal of him. According to Tipp Insights, 92% of the news coverage surrounding Trump is negative. Sure, he has pushed controversial policies, but there are also undeniable positive outcomes from his leadership.

For instance, illegal border crossings have reportedly dropped. Trump previously criticized President Biden for the situation, stating Biden can’t do much about it. Inflation rates are edging down, yet are still impacted by Trump’s tariffs. And there are signs of improvement in political relations in the Middle East, particularly following Trump’s removal of sanctions, which has led to a more collaborative Syrian government and a significant blow to Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Of course, there’s always something to complain about—there usually is. However, the consistent portrayal of negativity at 92% raises questions about media bias.

On a different note, the realm of alternative media and particularly podcasts seems to have ramped up its fervor against Trump. Claims range from discussing his supposed dementia to various wild conspiracy theories, including a death rumor.

This intense focus on negativity not only draws clicks but also provides a financial incentive for those participating in this narrative. Yet, it seems unlikely to help Democrats form a solid political strategy for the future, especially when Trump eventually steps back.

To sum it up, Democrats seem to be defining themselves primarily through opposition rather than through a cohesive vision. And without Trump, one wonders what they truly stand for.

A major issue with the party is their disconnect from the broader public. A recent YouGov poll highlighted inflation as the top concern for 18% of Democrats, but 28% of independents and 26% of Republicans felt the same way. Climate change was mentioned by Democrats but ranked lower among independents, with just 4% seeing it as a priority. Healthcare and civil rights are more pressing for Democrats, while concerns like taxes and spending seem to take a backseat.

Over the past year, I’ve noted from YouGov polling that issues like climate change and civil rights top the list for Democrats and liberals. However, both independents and Republicans appear to prioritize financial issues much more. It’s worth noting that even inflation, which is seen as crucial for Democrats, is rated higher by independents and Republicans by 11 and 13 points, respectively.

But this divergence on priorities is just part of the problem. There seems to be a lack of a unified approach among Democrats on how to tackle issues that concern independents.

Take inflation, for example. Under Biden’s leadership, rates have surged, coupled with more than double in interest rates, making everyday expenses like mortgages and car loans significant. To address inflation effectively, the president could consider cuts in spending or deregulation to alleviate costs for consumers and businesses. Unfortunately, these options seem off the table for the current administration, leading to ineffective public messaging.

A similar trend is observed in issues regarding illegal immigration and crime. Democrats have largely avoided addressing the fundamental causes of these problems. This tactic might allow them to maintain a moral high ground, but it doesn’t lead to real solutions.

The reasons behind illegal immigration stem largely from dire economic and political conditions in other nations. Fixing the crises in places like Central America is a monumental task that will take generations. The situation in Venezuela is no different, and Democrats remain hesitant to leverage their power in ways that might provide solutions.

On the issue of domestic crime, Democrats have at least stepped back from aggressively defunding the police, but that basic shift does little to reassure those who feel unsafe due to rising crime rates. So, while the attempts to discuss root causes may sound good on paper, they don’t resonate with those facing real danger on the streets.

Ultimately, unless Democrats break free from the constraints of their core supporters, achieving a lasting majority is unlikely. This could potentially pave the way for Trump or his successors to gain further power. So far, that seems like a risky strategy.
