Senate Democrats Address Immigration Violations Amid Past Tragedy
This week, Senate Democrats aimed to address past grievances while leveraging the sorrow from three years ago to galvanize opposition against the Trump administration’s handling of federal immigration laws.
On Tuesday, members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee posted a picture of Anadis Danay Reyes Alvarez, an 8-year-old undocumented immigrant, claiming she “died in government custody.”
One Democrat pointed out, “It’s really strange that President Trump let her die in 2023.”
They stated that Anadis had sickle cell and congenital heart disease, which prevented her from receiving timely medical care. “We need to reform immigration detention,” they added, stressing the urgency of their call to action.
However, Democrats did not acknowledge that Anadis passed away under the Biden-Harris administration in 2023, a time when the southern border was largely open and border facilities were overwhelmed.
Born in Panama to Honduran parents, Anadis entered the U.S. illegally on May 9, 2023. She was with her family at a Customs and Border Protection facility in Harlingen, Texas, in anticipation of a deportation flight to Honduras when she experienced a medical emergency and died.
According to reports from CBP, Anadis was initially medically assessed at the Donna processing facility in Texas and had no complaints of acute illness. Yet, days later, she began to report symptoms such as abdominal pain, nasal congestion, and a cough. During this time, she was treated with medications like Tamiflu and Zofran.
The family was subsequently moved to the Harlingen facility, intended for cases requiring medical isolation. Although Anadis was provided with ongoing medical care, her condition deteriorated. Despite her mother’s call for an ambulance, there was a delay, leading to her suffering a seizure. She was later transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on May 17, 2023.
Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats, some of whom support reducing funding for the Department of Homeland Security, pointed to a report indicating ongoing issues with staffing at CBP facilities. They asserted that the conditions surrounding Anadis’s death reflect systemic failures in medical care provided at these facilities.
The Democratic report raised alarms about the potential for “more individuals and children to die” under the current administration. Their tweet seemed to aim at exploiting the tragedy for political gain, reminiscent of past events during the Democratic administration and amid criticisms of the current government’s policies.
Critics like Robert Sterling remarked on social media, questioning the Democratic narrative: “It’s so weird that President Trump let her die in 2023,” while conservative writer Brian Files remarked on the tweet’s intention to manipulate public sentiment regarding border security, noting the context of Anadis’s actual circumstances under the Biden administration.
Amid rising criticisms, Andrew Bates, Biden’s former deputy White House press secretary, responded defensively, stating, “It’s not about Democrat or Republican; it’s just wrong.” Republican operative Tim Murtaugh retorted, emphasizing the irony of Bates’s statements regarding events that unfolded during his tenure at the White House.
Bates reaffirmed his stance, expressing deep regret over the incident. President Biden remarked that he is proud of the public’s rejection of ICE’s harsh treatment of immigrants, although it seemed he had not publicly addressed Anadis’s death when it occurred.
