When the news surfaced about former President Biden’s cancer diagnosis, reactions among Democrats were largely supportive. However, one source had a different take, questioning how long it would be before Trump began to criticize him.
Interestingly, it took Trump longer than expected to respond. Initially, he expressed sympathy. In a statement, he conveyed, “Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We send our best wishes to Jill and the family and hope for a quick recovery.”
This sentiment didn’t last long, though. The very next day, when asked for his thoughts, Trump shifted gears. He described the situation as “very sad” but suggested that it was alarming, indicating that the situation raised concerns about Biden’s health.
Trump noted, “It’s very dangerous for our country,” implying that Biden should undergo a cognitive test to confirm his fitness for office. He went on to claim that there was a lack of honesty regarding Biden’s health, which, according to Trump, posed a significant problem.
The following day, Trump escalated his criticism, alleging that Biden and his advisors had been using autopens to enact border policies without his knowledge. This accusation seemed to raise questions about Biden’s mental state, particularly as Trump launched strategies to undermine him amid the ongoing political landscape.
During a press encounter, Trump remarked, “We need to look into who authorized these actions.” He kept referring to Biden derisively as “Sleepy Joe,” even after Biden withdrew from the race, insisting Biden was not “playing with a full deck.”
Trump made fun of Biden’s communication abilities, asserting his inability to string together coherent sentences. He even joked about a recent rally, highlighting Biden’s difficulty navigating a stage, bringing attention to moments that he found humorous yet concerning.
Meanwhile, Biden’s cancer diagnosis is a separate issue that has caused ripples within the Democratic Party, which is already grappling with credibility problems. Following major losses in the previous election, party members are trying to understand the disconnect with voters. Some have concluded that public perception of Biden’s capabilities has faltered, particularly after his performance at various debates last year.
Former Democratic contender Dean Phillips suggested there was a strategic reason for announcing Biden’s diagnosis when they did, hinting at an effort to deflect from recent scrutiny. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence,” Phillips commented.
While many in the Democratic camp believed it was important to give Biden and his family some privacy, there were notable dissenting voices. Questions arose regarding the awareness of Biden’s advisors and whether they had accurately communicated the situation. A Democratic strategist openly expressed doubts about the trustworthiness of the party, marking a glaring concern for the future.
Reflecting on the political landscape, the strategist lamented, “This is why we lost, and we’ll continue to lose unless there’s change.”
