Democrats Push Back Against Trump’s Immigration Policies
In various blue states throughout the U.S., Democrats have proposed a staggering number of nearly 250 pro-immigration bills as a counter to President Donald Trump’s immigration and deportation initiatives.
A left-leaning organization called State Futures has reported that there are 242 bills across 32 states, with around 20% already passed, according to Oregon Live.
While these bills have garnered significant backing from state Democrats, they face considerable opposition from federal legal actions. In fact, in some blue states, Democratic governors have vetoed certain bills, fearing they might be too extreme.
In an interesting turn of events, a non-English speaker who has resided in the U.S. since 1989 has requested amnesty, raising eyebrows.
Included in these proposed measures is a ban on federal law enforcement officers wearing masks, which Trump has criticized as unconstitutional. The bills also aim to restrict federal employees from using masked license plates and to prevent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from leveraging government property and from establishing new detention centers.
Notably, 53 laws intended to limit federal immigration actions have been enacted in 17 states, but most are currently facing a legal review process.
Many of these initiatives enjoy support from activist legal firms that some critics view as a tactical assault on Trump using legal mechanisms.
According to recent reports, pro-amnesty groups have inundated the legal system with around 20,000 lawsuits targeting Trump’s immigration policies.
These legal challenges are often supported by judges appointed under the Obama and Biden administrations. In fact, Biden’s appointed judges have ruled against ICE detention in about 92% of 5,914 cases, while Obama’s judges ruled against them in 95% of 4,360 cases. Comparatively, judges selected by President Trump sided with ICE in only 34% of 3,946 cases.
James Percival, the general counsel for the Department of Homeland Security, claimed that liberals are using these judges to undermine the president’s agenda. “They understand that if they gather enough progressive district judges, they could stall things indefinitely,” he said, highlighting what he believes is their strategy.
