Democrats Call for Gun Control After School Shooting in Minneapolis
In the wake of a tragic school shooting in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Democrats are intensifying their calls for stricter gun control measures.
Expressing their horror over the incident at Minneapolis Announcement Catholic Schools, many have emphasized gratitude towards the first responders on-site. The police later confirmed the shooting at the school, where, sadly, two children aged 8 and 10 lost their lives.
Senator Sri Tanedar from Michigan voiced his fear about the shooting on social media, arguing that events like this shouldn’t be seen as normal. “The straightforward solution is to enact sensible gun control,” he stated.
The Litchfield Police Department indicated that there were as many as 20 victims related to the shooting. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara shared with reporters that the families of the deceased children have been notified of the heartbreaking news.
According to messages from the Minneapolis Police Department, there is currently no ongoing threat to the community. Reports suggest that a suspect, whose identity has not yet been revealed, has died.
Following the shooting, members of Congress are grappling with the reality of safety, especially concerning families. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, the highest-ranking Minnesotan in Congress, expressed his prayers for the victims and their families while sharing updates from the scene.
Meanwhile, Minnesota senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar have also acknowledged the efforts of law enforcement but did not explicitly mention gun control goals in their statements. Smith highlighted the alarming fact that, during the first week of school, children should not feel in danger.
In this time of mourning, the voices calling for change are growing louder, as the community and lawmakers reflect on the need for safety in schools.
