Calls for Miami Councillor’s Resignation Over Controversial Post

A local Miami politician is facing mounting pressure to resign after posting a controversial message on social media regarding Charlie Kirk, who was recently assassinated during a speech at the University of Utah. Steve Cody, a councillor for Miami-Dade Village in Palmetto Bay, described Kirk as a “proper sacrifice” to gun manufacturers, igniting outrage in the community.

Cody’s Facebook post, which included a reference to Smith & Wesson—an established firearms manufacturer—drew sharp criticism. Nearly immediately, a group of upset residents gathered outside the Palmetto Bay Town Hall, demanding his resignation.

One resident expressed, “The damage has already been done. It’s not about politics; it’s just immoral and reveals his true character,” as reported by CBS News Miami.

Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during an event on Wednesday, prompting law enforcement to detain a 22-year-old from Utah the following Friday.

Cody’s post stated, “Charlie Kirk is a worthy sacrifice for our Lord: Smith & Wesson. Their names have become sacred.” Following the backlash, he admitted that he regretted his remark, suggesting he should have kept his thoughts private.

“If I had thought more about it, I would have probably just kept that idea to myself,” Cody stated to a local news outlet. Despite his apology, he said he would not resign, insisting he wants to fulfill his term until 2028. “I regret doing it… It wasn’t my intention to hurt Charlie Kirk’s family or the broader community,” he explained.

Palmetto Bay Mayor Karin Cunningham responded, asserting that Cody’s remarks were not in line with the responsibilities of an elected official. She noted, “I think we are bound by a higher bar, and I feel it’s best for our community to pursue a different direction.” Florida Attorney General James Usmierer echoed this sentiment, suggesting Cody should resign if his post is deemed legal.

In the wake of Kirk’s assassination, several left-leaning commentators have also faced scrutiny for their reactions. MSNBC even dismissed political analyst Matthew Dowd for his remarks related to Kirk.

Notable Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Chris Murphy, and Jamie Raskin have publicly condemned the climate of political violence, which they attribute to inflammatory rhetoric, including comments made by former President Trump. However, they refrained from addressing Kirk’s death directly.

As the situation unfolds, requests for comments from Cody remain unanswered.
