Democrats Keep Distance from Socialist Zohran Mamdani Following His Claim of Triumph Over Party's 'Essence'

Zoran Mamdani’s Mayoral Campaign and Democratic Dynamics

Zoran Mamdani, a self-identified socialist, argues that progressives have positioned Democrats favorably in his mayoral campaign. However, he believes establishment Democrats aren’t ready to relinquish control.

At a rally with 3,000 supporters, the 33-year-old mayoral candidate proclaimed that his campaign has secured the “soul of the Democratic Party.” A Daily Caller News Foundation inquiry directed at 11 Senate Democrats highlighted a trend: all opted to distance themselves from Mamdani.

When asked about Mamdani’s assertions, Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, a noted Democratic figure, expressed her focus on Michigan rather than New York affairs, remarking, “I think New York politics is different than Kansas politics, and Kansas politics is different than Michigan politics.”

Senator Gary Peters added that New York City dynamics do not necessarily apply nationwide.

The NDP has shown hesitance in backing Mamdani, especially after his surprising win against former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the June primary. Yet, more Democrats are aligning with him as the election draws closer and his lead in the polls appears significant.

Despite this support, many Democratic figures are cautious, aiming to keep Mamdani’s influence contained to New York’s five wards.

Senator Ruben Gallego from Arizona acknowledged a need to include Mamdani but noted the need for his brand to be localized. Democratic Senator Ben Ray Lujan voiced his disapproval, asking rhetorically about discussions among his New York counterparts.

Prominent New York senators, including Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, have also noted Mamdani’s growing presence in the electoral landscape.

Some national Democrats seem uneasy with Mamdani’s more extreme leftist views, fearing they could further damage the party’s already declining image. Republican leaders, including Donald Trump, suggest that Mamdani’s socialist stance could benefit their chances in upcoming midterm elections.

Mamdani has previously advocated for police defunding amid the Black Lives Matter protests, labeling law enforcement as a significant public safety concern.

His platform includes polarizing proposals such as freezing rent rates and abolishing advanced educational programs for gifted children. There’s also controversy surrounding his call for “globalizing the intifada,” which many interpreted as inciting violence against Jewish communities, though he continues to stand by his pledge to criminally charge Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits Manhattan.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has dodged inquiries regarding his support for Mamdani, shifting focus to the diversity of party opinions instead of directly tackling socialism in the party. He noted plans to meet with Mamdani again before early voting begins.

Other Democratic senators responded politely but avoided clear endorsements. Senator Mark Kelly emphasized the range of beliefs within the party. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester, while acknowledging positive energy from New York, declined to comment on specific remarks, as did Senators Chris Murphy and Elizabeth Warren, who were unaware of Mamdani’s statements.

Despite mixed reactions, some, including Senator Bernie Sanders, assert that Mamdani’s candidacy could be crucial in revitalizing Democratic power by advocating for working-class concerns.

A spokesperson for Mamdani has yet to provide a response to recent inquiries.
