Democrats must do what seems unthinkable to keep together the coalition against fascism that won the election

Marxist commentator Hasan Piker used an appearance on “Democracy Now!” to criticize Democratic leaders and outline what he believes the party should do next.

Speaking with host Amy Goodman, Piker argued that Republicans’ heavy losses in the midterm elections showed growing support for the party’s left wing. He said candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America had performed especially well, while faulting Democratic leaders for portraying some left-leaning lawmakers as moderates and rejecting language about class conflict.

Piker described the election as the end of a decade marked, in his view, by “death and destruction and destabilization” under the MAGA movement. He said Democrats would need to take an unusual step if they wanted to make the defeat lasting: listen to voters and act on their demands.

Among those demands, he said, was reducing U.S. military involvement abroad. Piker also argued that the Iran war, along with high gas prices, contributed to Republicans’ poor results.

He said he would organize people to hold Democrats accountable if they failed to deliver on their promises.

Piker also said he would support Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont if Sanders sought to lead the Senate, arguing that Sanders better represents Democratic voters than Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York or House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, also of New York.
