Partisan Conflict Erupts During Immigration Hearing

On Wednesday, a hearing held by the Homeland Security Committee regarding the involvement of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the immigration crisis turned heated, showcasing sharp partisan divides.

Mike Howell, president of the Surveillance Project and a contributor to Blaze News, faced intense opposition from Democrats, who frequently attempted to disrupt the proceedings with unplanned procedural votes.

Howell described Representative Benny Thompson (D-Miss.) as an “emotional hypocrite,” following Thompson’s efforts to suspend Howell’s opening testimony and request a recorded vote on remarks deemed unrelated to the hearing’s topic.

The Democrats framed Howell’s initial comments as inciting violence against immigrants and customs enforcement personnel. Howell countered, asserting that many NGOs supporting the Biden administration’s immigration policies were also fueling the anti-ICE movement.

Ultimately, the Republican majority voted to allow Howell to continue. Nevertheless, Democrats persisted in creating obstacles, pushing for the summoning of additional witnesses.

The frequent interruptions blurred the focus on the testimonies, with many Democrats opting for monologues instead of questioning the witnesses.

Howell later characterized the hearing as one of “confusion,” emphasizing that Thompson avoided addressing the connection between his party’s calls for violence and the resulting implications.

As the hearing progressed, Howell found himself in a tense exchange with Representative Yassamine Ansari (D-Ariz.), who had sought to participate despite not being a committee member. Her attempt to question Howell about alleged abuses in an ICE detention center backfired when Howell requested clarification on her question.

Ansari, asserting that immigrant women in the center lived in fear and faced harassment, posed the question, “Do you support this type of human treatment?” To which Howell replied, “Sorry. I didn’t listen,” prompting a visibly surprised Ansari to repeat her inquiry. He then confirmed that he supported the detention of undocumented aliens through immigration lawsuits, to which Ansari expressed her disapproval.

The conversation eventually strayed further, with Ansari querying Howell about the oversight of ICE facilities. Howell contended that individual members of Congress lack the authority to supervise these facilities, citing House rules.

In a notable moment, Ansari attempted to challenge Howell’s viewpoints regarding the Epstein files, suggesting his previous comments aligned with a false narrative. Howell responded firmly, clarifying that his statements were misquoted.

In a show of support, Representative Eli Crane (R-Ariz.) praised Howell’s performance on social media, indicating that the Democrats were unprepared for his responses.
