Democrats Quickly Blamed ‘Climate Change’ for Los Angeles Fire Said to Be Started by an Arsonist

Following the devastating fire in Pacific Palisades, California this year, Democratic leaders quickly attributed the incident to climate change. However, on Wednesday, the Trump administration revealed that an arsonist was behind the fire.

Deputy U.S. Attorney Bill Esseri announced that a suspect had been arrested in relation to the arson investigation connected to the January fire. Over the course of 24 days, the blaze destroyed homes and claimed the lives of more than a dozen people. Long before the cause was identified, many Democratic officials had already posted about how climate change was exacerbating the situation.

For instance, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders stated, “Donald Trump has to treat this like an existential crisis,” emphasizing on January 8th that “climate change is real, not a ‘hoax’.” He shared a post about the ongoing situation, pointing out the severity of the damage and loss.

Senator Ed Markey from Massachusetts also stated on January 30 that the wildfires were “caused by climate change.” Similarly, California Senator Alex Padilla made related comments on January 24. Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse had previously called out President Trump regarding fires and climate change.

The White House noted on January 10 that it appreciated Time magazine’s criticism of Trump’s statements and acknowledged the serious impact of climate change resulting from fossil fuel misinformation and political corruption. California Congressman Jared Huffman emphasized the need for immediate aid and safety for those affected by the fires, stating that real action on climate solutions must follow.

Both Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom described the situation as “unprecedented,” with Newsom branding the fires a “natural disaster” while stressing that “climate change is here and it’s real.”

A spokesperson from Newsom’s office remarked that both arson and climate change played roles in exacerbating the wildfires, indicating that hurricane-force winds contributed to the fire’s spread.

Experts in emergency management previously noted that the Palisades and Eaton fires were worsened by water supply issues in the area. They emphasized that past warnings about the state of water infrastructure and forest management were being overlooked. Edward Ring, director of water and energy policy at the California Policy Center, expressed concern that the consequences were particularly severe in densely populated regions like Los Angeles.

During this time, Newsom pledged to investigate the factors contributing to hydrant failures and water supply shortages. Interestingly, various media outlets were quick to connect the fire damage in Pacific Palisades to climate change.

Requests for comments from staffers for Bass, Markey, Padilla, Whitehouse, Huffman, and Sanders went unanswered.
