Democrats, Republicans Press Eric Adams, Kathy Hochul to Suspend NY Sanctuary Law

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) and New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) are under growing pressure to end city and state sanctuary policies that protect illegal aliens who commit crimes from deportation. There is.

Since President-elect Donald Trump's victory last month, both Adams and Hochul have helped Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents deport criminally illegal aliens from New York, one of the largest sanctuary states in the United States. has expressed support for.

“If someone breaks the law, I'm going to be the first one to call ICE and say, 'Get them out of here,'” Hochul said. said At a press conference last month.

Democrats and Republicans on the New York City Council are now calling on Hochul to stand by her words and suspend the state's sanctuary law, which prohibits local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE agents.

“The recent spike in violent crime, including reported incidents of rape, robbery, assault, and even firing of police officers by immigrant gangs in Central Park and Queen's Park, requires immediate and decisive action. Action is required.” City council members sent a letter to Hochul as follows:

Based on the emergency powers granted to your office, we strongly encourage you to consider issuing an executive order that would allow New York City to temporarily waive the sanctuary city law. This will allow federal agencies, including ICE, to work more effectively with local law enforcement to address these serious threats. During the COVID-19 pandemic, your office and your predecessor's office utilized executive orders to quickly respond to the crisis. We believe that the current situation with the potential for terrorist-related activities and escalating violence in the city requires a similar response. [Emphasis added]

The letter was led by Robert Holden (D-Queens) and co-sponsored by Joseph Borelli (R-Staten Island), Inna Vernikov (R-Brooklyn), David Carr (R-Staten Island), and Kalman Jaeger (R-Staten Island). Brooklyn), signed by Joanne. Arriola (R-Queens), Vicki Palladino (R-Queens), Christy Marmorato (R-Bronx), and Susan Chuang (D-Brooklyn).

Similarly, Holden sent a letter to Adams urging him to begin lobbying against New York City's sanctuary policy. Specifically, Holden said Adams should start by reopening the closed ICE office on Rikers Island.

“Hard arguments are good, but actions speak louder,” Holden said.

The Mayor had the opportunity to amend or repeal the Sanctuary City Act through the Charter Revision Commission, but chose not to do so. It's time to right these wrongs. To demonstrate a true commitment to public safety, Mayor Adams should reopen the ICE office on Rikers Island and give the NYPD, Department of Corrections, and Department of Probation the ability to communicate with ICE. And we salute criminal immigrant detainees. [Emphasis added]

Former Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) closed the ICE office on Rikers Island in 2015.

Adams this week criticized President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for releasing millions of immigrants into the United States, hundreds of thousands of whom ended up in New York City.

“We have not invested in our seniors and young people as much as we should have…The crimes we have witnessed…We should all be angry about what has happened to our city under this administration,” Adams said. said.

Adams said he wants to work with Trump and incoming border czar Thomas Homan to help deport criminal illegal aliens from New York City.

“People here are committing crimes, robberies, shooting police officers, raping innocent people, and they are a disservice to our country. I want to hear the plan,” Adams said. “It's them I'm talking about. I would love to meet the Border Emperor and hear his thoughts on how to deal with those who are harming our people.”
