Democrats Return to Net Neutrality, Despite Economic Damage

Thursday’s vote by the Democratic majority at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reinstate Obama-era net neutrality rules returns the United States to the vulnerable position it was in before the policy ended under the Trump administration.

A return to net neutrality is likely to be challenged in court, but it signals continued ideological attachment to a policy that amounts to a form of crony socialism. The idea behind this policy is that Internet service providers (ISPs) charge some users more for content than others, limit access for poorer consumers, and in some cases limit access to content. This means that there is a possibility that it may be restricted. (Ironically, Silicon Valley has had no problem with government censorship of conservatives.)

This policy prevents broadband providers from profiting from their infrastructure investments. Ironically, therefore, net neutrality restricts access to the internet by discouraging investment.as wall street journal recently I got it.:

After the Obama FCC imposed Title II, broadband investment declined for the first time outside of a recession.

Things changed after the Trump FCC repealed the Obama rule. Investment and access to high-speed internet soared. By the end of 2019, 94% of Americans had access to high-speed fixed and mobile broadband, up from 77% in 2015. In 2022, broadband builders installed more than 400,000 route miles of fiber, an increase of more than 50% from 2016.

Prices have fallen due to increased competition. A study by Casey Mulligan and Phil Karpen of the Committee to Unleash Prosperity found that from September 2017 to September 2023, the price index for wired internet services increased by 11% compared to the overall consumer price index. It turned out that it had fallen. Wireless CPI fell 21% in real terms. The biggest winners from this price drop were low-income households who pay a higher percentage of their income for broadband.

The fact that Trump FCC repealed net neutrality has encouraged Americans to survive the coronavirus lockdowns imposed primarily by Democrats by working from home and entertaining their families during the pandemic. was completed.

Now, the Biden FCC is putting future broadband investments at risk, even under President Joe Biden. claim credit For federal investment in broadband. In yet another irony, the FCC could undermine Biden’s broadband infrastructure goals.
