Democrats seek to hold Alaska House seat in maverick state

Democrats are preparing for a tough fight in Alaska. In the state, Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola is seeking reelection after an unexpected victory in the 2022 midterm elections that turned a House seat held by Republicans for 50 years blue.

Mr. Peltola was the first Alaska Native to serve in Congress, establishing himself as a moderate focused on state-specific issues for his constituents.

However, if former President Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate, appears on the ballot and draws Republican voters to the polls, he could face more difficulty in his re-election campaign in November.

“With Trump at the top of the ballot, [President] “Biden leading the polls will have an impact on Democratic and Republican turnout,” said Robert, a strategist who previously worked for Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska). Dillon said.

“I expect the Republican Party to strongly support Mr. Trump. The far-right Republican Party, with Mr. Trump on the ballot, will have more people voting than have ever voted for a Republican. “Maybe they’ll vote for a straight ticket,” he said.

Since Alaska joined the Union in 1959, the state has only had one at-large representative in the state’s House of Representatives. Before Peltola’s election, the state known as the “last frontier” had not had a Democratic representative in the House of Representatives since 1972. When I was a member of Congress at the time. Nick Begich (D) was presumed dead in a plane crash.

The late Rep. Don Young (Republican) narrowly won a special election to choose his successor the following year and held his seat for nearly 50 years. He would serve in that position until his death in March 2022, when another special election would be held.

Mr. Peltola, a former member of the Alaska House of Representatives, won the first race in which Alaska adopted the ranked-choice voting system that voters narrowly approved in 2020. She also won the general election in November of the same year, making her fully elected. Term of office.

Mr. Peltola defeated former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, and businessman Nick Begich III, the grandson of a former congressman, in both the special election and the general election. Her main opponents this year will be Begich and Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom (R).

Alaska is a reliably red state at the presidential level, having not elected a Democratic governor since the 1990s, but more than half of all voters are not registered with one political party. In ranked-choice voting, a candidate’s goal is to build a broader base of support, including voters who prefer another candidate.

“The system is designed to support candidates who can build the broadest possible coalition. Therefore, candidates who can expand their appeal beyond their hardcore base have a better chance of winning the second vote. Because of that, they are likely to do better under this system,” said Dillon, who helped advocate for ranked-choice voting in 2020.

Begich said in an interview that Republicans’ best chance of winning back seats is to rally around one candidate. He said he and Dahlstrom publicly committed to ranking each other second on the ballot.

Alaska’s election system consists of an at-large primary in which all candidates compete on the same ballot, with the top four candidates advancing to the general election.

Voters then rank those candidates in order of preference. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, the last candidate is eliminated and his votes are redistributed according to the voter’s second choice. This process continues until one candidate receives a majority.

“My hope is to narrow this race down to one candidate on the right side of the aisle, and have the opportunity to compare Mary Peltola’s record with the policies that Alaska conservatives would like to see implemented in Washington, D.C.” ”Begić said.

He said this is the first time in memory that he considers immigration a top issue for Alaska. Fentanyl epidemic in the stateHe expects energy issues to figure prominently in the campaign as the August primary approaches.

He noted that Peltola voted against the Republican-led bill. deal with borders and energy production.

Begich echoed Peltola’s opinion. Biden support It will hurt her, just like the Biden administration did. Drilling within the state is limited..

“This is a great opportunity for Republicans to take back seats,” he said. “It’s certainly gotten the attention of people not only in Alaska but across the country.”

He pointed to a poll by a left-wing pollster that showed him and Peltola tied at 50% approval rating Final round of a hypothetical ranked selection matchup.

The House Republican campaign arm has put Peltola’s seat on its list of targets for 2024.

Dahlstrom said in a statement that the election is aimed at “bringing conservative leadership back to Alaska.” She noted that Republican leaders, including Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy (R-La.) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), are backing her.

“I decided to run because our current representatives are failing us,” she said. “I am focused on ending Biden’s countless executive actions that are devastating our state, stopping the flow of illegal immigration and drugs into our country, and unlocking Alaska’s energy potential to get our economy back on track.” Masu.”

Mr. Peltola has established a reputation as a moderate willing to oppose the party through his votes in the House, and he is one of the largest Democratic defectors in the House. She still votes overwhelmingly for Democrats, and Republicans will likely target her support.

Pertola campaign manager Elisa Rios said in a statement that the congressman has worked across the aisle to help Alaska families and battled traffic congestion. She said Peltola’s advocacy for the Willow project, which was approved by the Biden administration, has brought additional jobs and tax revenue to the state. opposed the proposed merger She claims the negotiations between Kroger and Albertsons will increase the cost of groceries.

“[Peltola] I always say the best strategy for winning re-election is to do your job well. We think she does, and her constituents agree,” Rios said.

John Henry Heckendon, an Alaska-based strategist, said candidates face challenges campaigning in Alaska because of its geography. “It is the most logistically complex chamber in which to campaign.” He noted that some areas of the state are only accessible by ferry or plane, and that Alaska has “tremendous regional, cultural and economic diversity.”

“That’s a big hurdle. I think that’s one of them. [Peltola’s] greatest strength. “It’s not so much that Peltola was able to convince voters to vote Democratic, but that she was able to convince Alaskans to vote,” he said, referring to how Peltola could have won in 2022. and spoke.

Begich said the first use of ranked-choice voting affected the House race two years ago, with Peltola the only Democrat in the race and the Republican Party split between him and Palin. But voters have now confirmed the outcome that will elect a Democrat to the House, and at least one poll shows a close race despite Mr. Peltola having a significant fundraising advantage, he said. added.

“I was able to win this race completely even with her, and I think that momentum will continue into November,” he said.

But strategists noted that Mr. Peltola is the most popular statewide official in Alaska, with 51% of respondents viewing him favorably in one poll last month.

Heckendon noted that Young’s slogan during his tenure was “Congressman for All of Alaska,” and that he was able to build a coalition based on “Alaskans first, Republicans second.” He compared this to Peltola’s strategy.

“When you look at Peltola and Young on paper, you see a young, dynamic Alaska Native woman versus an older, crusty white man, and yet their strategies for success are very similar. ” he said.
