Democrat Sam Sutton has emerged victorious in a special election for the New York Senate, successfully countering Republican efforts to shift conservative districts, according to Decist Desk HQ.
Sutton, a businessman and leader of a nonprofit organization for several years, defeated Republican Nachman Callenor, a lawyer with a prior run for the state legislature about ten years ago. His win ensures that the Democrats maintain control following the resignation of former state senator Simcha Felder, who stepped down last month to join the New York City Council.
The results were initially unclear since Felder, a conservative Democrat, had a history of collaborating with the GOP. He often secured his position without facing opposition from either party.
State Senate District 22 includes areas of Brooklyn, which notably supported President Trump in the last presidential election.
Interestingly, this district also contains a significant orthodox Jewish population. Sutton has established a strong rapport with the Sephardi community as a co-leader of the Sephardi Community Federation.
His key policy focuses revolve around a “community-based approach” to enhancing public safety, boosting school funding, and advancing clean energy initiatives.
