Democrats urge impeachment of Kristi Noem following deadly ICE shooting

Press Conference Following Shooting of Renee Nicole Good

On Wednesday, a week after the tragic shooting of Renee Nicole Good, several Democratic lawmakers held a press conference to address the incident. They expressed strong condemnation of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and urged for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The event was organized by Rep. Bennie Thompson from Mississippi, who serves as the ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee, and featured a number of prominent Democrats.

Good was shot and killed on January 7 during an encounter with ICE agents, sparking widespread outrage and protests across the country against federal immigration practices.

“Renee Good was a mother of three, a wife, a writer, and a devoted Christian,” Thompson stated at the conference’s outset.

He later criticized actions taken by the Trump administration post-shooting as “hateful” and “harmful.” Thompson specifically called out Secretary Noem for allegedly lying about the circumstances, asserting that her response initiated a “brazen federal political investigation.” He also expressed concern that the investigation seemed to be designed to shield the shooter from prosecution by excluding local officials.

During the gathering, some lawmakers took a firmer stance. Rep. Ilhan Omar from Minnesota openly called for Noem’s impeachment, saying, “ICE’s reckless actions have led to the murder of my children’s mother. We must fight for justice and accountability, which starts with impeaching Kristi Noem.” Omar stressed the necessity for a thorough and transparent investigation to prevent agents from acting without consequence.

Rep. Grace Meng from New York joined in, calling for an independent investigation into Good’s death and the release of all related video footage. He also referenced the ongoing protests and suggested that ICE should suspend operations in Minnesota to help ease tensions.

At the conference, Rep. Shri Thanedar from Michigan went further, advocating for both Noem’s impeachment and the abolition of ICE.

While Omar didn’t delve into the details surrounding the shooting, she mentioned that Good “chose love and unity over fear.” Meanwhile, Rep. LaMonica McIver from New Jersey directly addressed Noem, labeling her as “incompetent and cruel,” asserting, “The American people deserve better, and we’ll ensure you are removed from office.”

The Department of Homeland Security had previously supported the ICE actions, characterizing Good as a “domestic terrorist.” They contended that the shooting occurred as officers conducted a targeted operation when a crowd began to interfere, and one individual allegedly used a vehicle as a weapon against law enforcement. DHS described this as a case of domestic terrorism.

Statements of support for the ICE agents involved also came from President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and other officials. Fox News Digital has reached out to DHS for further comment.
