Strong Reactions Follow Sen. Padilla’s Removal from Press Conference

Members of Congress reacted with intensity after Senator Alex Padilla was ejected from a Homeland Security press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday. Notable figures like New York’s Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez expressed their dismay following the incident.

“It was crazy,” Ocasio-Cortez remarked.

“That’s a bad situation,” Jeffries added.

Democrats in attendance criticized the way the Secret Service handled the situation, particularly how Padilla was handcuffed and removed. Some even called for Secretary Christy Noem to resign. Following the incident, the two held a meeting that Padilla’s office indicated was conducted “from the heart,” despite clear disagreements.

Representative Anna Paulina Luna from Florida commented that the incident raises larger issues regarding optics for male Democrats. She noted, “I think the optics are pretty bad for all Democrat men.” Luna elaborated that Padilla’s actions—approaching Noem—were perceived as threatening, leading security to intervene.

“I think he was trying to get clickbait, but I don’t know how you grew up—I was raised not to throw tantrums,” she said, hinting at the peculiar nature of Padilla’s behavior.

Ohio’s Jim Jordan questioned why Padilla was in Los Angeles instead of Washington, D.C., especially since the Senate was in session at that time. “Why is he doing it here? And why isn’t he waiting for his own press conference?” he asked, implying that Padilla could have waited for a more appropriate moment.

Following his removal, Padilla clarified that he identified himself properly and mentioned that he lacked his security pins, which he felt contributed to the confusion. He had interrupted Noem while she was speaking to ask his questions.

“If this is how this administration responds to senators with questions, we can only imagine how they treat farmers and workers across California and the nation,” Padilla said after the ordeal, suggesting a broader issue with the administration’s approach to governance.

The Department of Homeland Security referred to the incident as “disrespectful political theatre,” noting that the press conference was intended to address concerns about immigration enforcement in the area.
