Senate Judiciary Committee Votes on Trump Judicial Nominee

During a recent Executive Committee meeting, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee walked out prior to the vote advancing President Donald Trump’s judicial nominee, Emil Bove.

Senator Cory Booker, representing New Jersey, pressed R-Iowa Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley to allow the former Justice Department attorney, Erez Reuveni, to examine allegations against Bove outlined in the Whistleblower report. Booker aimed to extend the discussion by invoking Rule 4 of the Commission’s Rules. Grassley, however, denied this request and moved straight to a vote.

Before departing the meeting, Booker confronted Grassley, questioning, “What are you afraid of?” This outburst came after Grassley attempted to speak and pushed for the vote. “I want to discuss this nomination and get things on the record,” Booker emphasized, expressing frustration about the lack of dialogue.

He criticized the process, stating, “There is no decency in this. There is no politeness. We haven’t heard from our colleagues.” In a bid for additional time for the committee to deliberate, he reiterated his concerns, asking, “Why are you doing this?” and speculated about the influence of the Trump administration.

Earlier this year, Trump announced the nomination of Emil Bove, a senior Justice Department official and former defense attorney, to the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. However, Bove’s path to confirmation in the Senate is complicated due to the allegations in the whistleblower report.
