Democrats who called for a Kavanaugh investigation remain quiet about Platner claims

Prominent Democrats, who previously insisted that allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh warranted investigation, are now responding differently to recent abuse claims against Graham Platner, a Democratic Senate candidate. Platner is challenging Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine.

Several former girlfriends of Platner shared troubling experiences with The New York Times, with one ex accusing him of physical violence during their relationship.

Platner has denied the allegations, asserting they are politically motivated. Meanwhile, Senator Bernie Sanders, a key supporter of Platner, opted not to comment on the situation. In contrast, Senator Chris Coons expressed to CNN that he would give Platner “some leeway,” emphasizing the need for accountability in any senatorial candidate.

Other Democratic leaders, however, have largely remained supportive of Platner despite the allegations. This reaction stands in stark contrast to their previous demands for scrutiny regarding allegations against Republican figures, such as Kavanaugh and former President Trump.

The New York Times reported that Platner’s ex-girlfriend, Lindsey Fifield, recounted instances where he allegedly grabbed her shoulders forcefully enough to leave marks and even dragged her out of a taxi by the wrist. In one argument, Platner supposedly twisted her arm behind her back and confined her in a room.

In response to the accusations, Platner stated, “There are some claims in this article that are simply not true,” insisting that the allegations of physical aggression were fabricated by someone with a political agenda.

California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna, set to campaign alongside Platner, reaffirmed his support, continuing a trend of Democratic leaders who have chosen to stand by him rather than distance themselves despite past reports of Platner exchanging explicit messages with multiple women during his marriage.

In light of the unfolding allegations, Platner traveled to Washington to meet with Democratic senators, hoping to address the sexting scandal. Senate leaders have questioned Platner privately about the potential for new controversies in his personal life, to which he assured there would be no further issues.

Although the claims of physical abuse were only disclosed recently, they have prompted mixed reactions. Senator John Fetterman remarked that Platner had misled everyone when commenting on his tattoo history, suggesting that there might be more undisclosed issues in Platner’s past.

Previously, during the Kavanaugh hearings, Sanders highlighted the need for thorough investigation following the allegations from Christine Blasey Ford, advocating for a delay in the confirmation process until the matter was fully examined.

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand had also called for scrutiny of the allegations against Kavanaugh, stressing the importance of listening to Ford’s testimony in the Senate’s decision-making process.

After meeting with Platner, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer skirted inquiries about the sexting issue, shifting focus to the campaign against Collins. His evasiveness has raised eyebrows among observers.

In terms of support, not all progressives are aligned with Platner. Cheyenne Hunt, head of the youth advocacy group Gen Z For Change, publicly withdrew her backing after the allegations surfaced, asserting that accountability must take precedence over political interests.

Platner has also faced scrutiny for a tattoo linked to a Nazi symbol, claiming he was unaware of its association until reporters began questioning it during his campaign. However, Fifield contends he referred to it as “my Totenkopf” and was aware of its meaning years before.
