Chicago priest advises Trump to remain silent following violence over Juneteenth weekend

Chicago Priest Responds to Trump’s Comments on Violence

A priest in Chicago, Father Michael Prager, recently told President Donald Trump to “shut up” after the president made remarks concerning a weekend of violence that resulted in six fatalities and over 30 injuries in the city.

Father Prager’s comments came as community leaders urged city officials to take action in combatting gun violence following the tragic events of June 10. Reports from the Chicago Police Department indicated that there were 24 shootings from Friday evening to late Sunday night, leading to multiple casualties.

On Sunday, Trump expressed his views on social media, suggesting federal troops could be sent to Chicago to help control the escalating crime rate. He asserted that he could transform Chicago into a safer city in a matter of time, similar to how Washington, D.C. has improved.

In response, Father Prager criticized Trump’s focus on violence, claiming, “I heard this morning that Donald Trump said he wanted to send people in. Gun violence will be solved in no time. First, this man lies every day.”

Pfleger emphasized that Trump should stop making empty promises and instead return the funding he had taken away, which was meant to prevent gun violence. He was clear in his disdain for the president’s rhetoric, insisting that actions should be taken rather than just words.

In reaction to the violence, various community and religious leaders gathered at City Hall to advocate for the creation of an Office of Gun Violence Prevention. This proposed office aims to focus on reducing gun-related incidents and coordinating local violence prevention initiatives.

While Trump has proposed federal interventions, local leaders remain opposed, advocating for increased funding for local programs as a means to address crime. The White House did praise Trump’s actions in other cities, claiming they had led to significant drops in violent crime.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson reiterated the need for investment in communities rather than federal intervention. He highlighted the negative impacts that cuts to essential services like education and health care have had on community safety.

Johnson expressed concern that Trump’s policies have not effectively benefited Black communities, pointing out the need for job creation, mental health services, and affordable housing to truly make a difference. It’s evident that the conflict between federal and local approaches to solving Chicago’s violence remains a contentious issue.
