Protests in response to the immigration policies of the Trump administration have been occurring across the United States. Many organizations are organizing demonstrations for Saturday, which also marks the president’s 79th birthday.
Coalitions like No Kings and 50501 are collaborating to hold protests in various states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas, among others.
In Texas, there will be specific protests in Austin, where Governor Greg Abbott has mentioned his readiness to deploy the National Guard.
This wave of protests follows an earlier demonstration against Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, some of these events turned violent, leading to property damage, prompting Trump to call for National Guard assistance despite Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass voicing their objections.
This week, the Pentagon dispatched 700 Marines to Los Angeles, following criticism of Newsom’s provocative response to the situation.
The current tensions appear to have sparked a legitimate conflict and set the stage for widespread protests nationwide.
“They opposed our courts and deported Americans, making people vanish from public view, attacking civil rights and cutting our services. The corruption has reached a breaking point. There’s no throne, no crown, and no king,” a protest coordinator stated.
Organizers have been holding Zoom meetings leading up to Saturday, planning and preparing to take to the streets in response to the crackdown on undocumented immigrants.
Rather than protesting in Washington during Trump’s grand military parade for the Army’s 250th birthday, the organizers have opted to focus their efforts in Philadelphia.
“We want to turn this birthday parade into a showcase of American stories everywhere else. We will come together in our communities to oppose harsh politics and corruption,” the group detailed on their website.
“So, instead of holding events in Washington, he’s going to conduct significant marches and rallies in Philadelphia, contrasting the congruence of people in Washington with the extravagant and wasteful birthday parades,” they added.
In a social media post, Trump warned that any protesters trying to disrupt the Washington military parade would face “a huge force,” referring to them as “animals” during comments made at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
“These are animals who proudly wave flags of other nations, yet don’t hold American flags. They burn them. Have you seen many flags being burned?” Trump remarked to the soldiers.
“Those who burn the American flag should face a year in prison,” he asserted, amidst the backdrop of ongoing demonstrations and significant protests in Los Angeles.
