Protests Erupt in Austin Following ICE Shooting

Protests took place in Austin, Texas, on Sunday after an ICE officer reportedly shot a fleeing undocumented immigrant. The Austin police chief stated that City Councilman Mike Siefel made incorrect claims regarding the incident, specifically alleging that the officer fired five shots through the car’s windshield. An investigation into the shooting is currently ongoing.

Officials from the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that an ICE officer shot and injured a Venezuelan immigrant. Police Chief Lisa Davis and Austin-Travis County EMS Director Robert Lickritz indicated that the man was wounded and is in serious but stable condition at a nearby trauma facility.

During a press briefing, Chief Davis mentioned that the individual attempted to flee from the ICE officers before the shooting. However, she noted that this detail had not been confirmed by ICE officials.

“From what I understand, there was a brief pursuit on foot,” Davis told the media. “But honestly, it’s still early days in this investigation.”

A video shared on social media by a bystander seems to capture a vehicle from ICE confronting another car. As an officer exits his vehicle and approaches the passenger side, several gunshots can be heard. The driver then attempts to flee, stopping just short of reaching an intersection.

Another video appears to show what happened moments later from a different angle. In it, the driver of the damaged sedan is seen seated inside as the ICE officer walks back to the car, seemingly calling for help for the injured man.

The passenger side of the sedan shows significant damage, with what looks like two bullet holes in the rear window.

Protesters soon gathered at the scene, challenging officers who were trying to conduct their initial investigation. Responding troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety used pepper spray to help maintain order amid the unrest.

The precise circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and authorities have not disclosed the identity of the Venezuelan man involved, although it has been confirmed that an immigration judge had ordered his removal.

It remains uncertain whether the officer was wearing a body camera during the shooting.

The incident is expected to undergo investigations by the FBI and Texas Rangers. ICE will likely carry out its internal review to determine whether the officer followed correct procedures during the encounter.
