On HBO's “Real Time” broadcast Friday, host Bill Maher said Democrats were able to “find their patriotism again.” But the reason it hasn't caught on with young people is because the protests that started as justice for Palestine have morphed into a broader message that America is the problem.
“The smartest thing the Democratic Party has done this year is to rediscover patriotism,” Maher said. “If you knew a year ago that Kamala Harris was the nominee, and in her acceptance speech she said, 'Privilege.' If you had told me that she would use the word, I would never have imagined that she would use it that way.
He then played a video of Harris saying:[T]For him, the greatest privilege on earth is the privilege and pride of being an American. ”
“Tim Walz also started his speech with a great line: “We're all here tonight for one beautiful, simple reason: We love this country.'' ''' he said. However, this message does not seem to be understood by many young people. None of them are standing up and shouting, that's my country. Quite the opposite. “The protests that started as justice for Palestine turned into something much broader, and the problem is America, we've messed up the whole world.”
