Several Democratic lawmakers are inviting guests to the State of the Union who are reportedly under surveillance by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). These individuals include suspected undocumented immigrants and others connected to various legal issues. A Fox News correspondent obtained information on this after responding to a tweet that claimed some Democrats intended to bring illegal immigrants to the event.
In a tweet, DHS expressed strong disapproval, stating that Democrats are prioritizing illegal immigrants over American safety. They highlighted recent arrests of serious criminals in communities, emphasizing that if someone enters the U.S. unlawfully, they will be apprehended.
A compilation of information by Fox News Digital showed that the guests represent a diverse array of backgrounds. For instance, Rep. Ilhan Omar from Minnesota welcomed Aliya Rahman, who was recently arrested during an operation linked to a suspect from Ecuador.
DHS confirmed that a warrant for an illegal immigrant was executed in Minneapolis, where officers arrested multiple individuals. While doing so, they reported that a crowd hindered their efforts, leading to the arrest of one person for obstruction of justice.
In response to claims that Rahman did not receive medical care after her arrest, DHS disputed the reports, suggesting that narratives circulated by some media outlets were misleading.
Another guest of Rep. Omar, Mary Granlund, is a local school board president who has been active in supporting children and families affected by recent immigration enforcement actions. She, along with teachers, has been involved in providing legal resources and food assistance to families fearful of leaving their homes.
On the other hand, Congressman Jesus Garcia invited Marimar Martinez, who faces serious allegations and was reportedly involved in a violent encounter with federal agents. Garcia emphasized the injustices Martinez has faced, stating that her own government nearly caused her death and has not taken responsibility for the incident.
Senator Richard Durbin extended an invitation to Tereza Lee, a pianist and daughter of immigrants, noting her inspiring story and how it has influenced his ongoing work on the DREAM Act, proposed consistently since 2001.
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi invited a student whose father was apprehended during a military operation. He criticized the impact of aggressive immigration policies on communities, urging that this issue extends beyond just the individuals affected.
Further, Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton hosted Marcelo Gomez da Silva, who DHS states is undocumented after his student visa lapsed. A DHS representative reiterated the administration’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws during a time of increasing scrutiny over handling illegal immigrants.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is hosting a Venezuelan immigrant whose son is detained during an immigration court session, while a DHS representative clarified the legal status of the detained individual.
Continuing this trend, California Rep. Mike Levin invited Stephanie Quintino, whose parents were deported. Other lawmakers are similarly highlighting individual stories of those affected by immigration policies.
Amid these tensions, several lawmakers are pushing back on perceived injustices and advocating for change in immigration policy. Each mentioned member has been approached for further comments regarding their stance on the ongoing situation.
