Dems lose ground to GOP contenders in pivotal Senate races as voters lock in: poll

Republican Senate candidates are catching up with their Democratic opponents in new battleground state polls, narrowing the gap in key races that will determine which party will control the Senate and how large their majority will be.

Republican candidate Dave McCormick in the Pennsylvania Senate election tied with longtime Senator Bob Casey Jr. (D-PA) in the biggest battleground state, according to new polling results. CNN Poll conducted by SSRS.

Casey's advantages as an incumbent and the son of a well-known family with deep roots in Pennsylvania showed signs of fading against McCormick's campaign in the polls, with the two trailing each other at 46 percent approval.

Polls so far have shown Mr McCormick trailing Mr Casey to varying degrees, and analysts have pointed to Mr McCormick's dwindling name recognition.

But with less than 10 weeks to go until the general election, voters are taking notice, especially in the biggest battleground state of Pennsylvania, and Republicans appear to be backing McCormick's candidacy.

Pennsylvania isn't the only state where Republican candidates are closing in on their opponents: In Arizona, former gubernatorial candidate Kali Lake challenged Rep. Ruben Gallego (D) by just three points, 47% to 44%, in the latest poll.

Republican candidate Eric Hovde of Wisconsin and former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers also each held single-digit leads over their Democratic opponents. Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin beat Hovde in the survey, 51% to 45%, while Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan beat Rogers, 47% to 41%.

In Nevada, retired Army Capt. Sam Brown lost by 10 points to Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV), who is fighting to hold on to her seat in the battleground state, with Rosen receiving 50% of the vote.

The race is generally tighter because Republican strategists expect average voters to take notice and support Republican candidates as the election approaches.

The closely-fought Senate race in Pennsylvania is especially important because strategists see incumbent Casey as the one most closely allied with Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, and his performance in the battleground could determine whether Harris wins or loses.

Former President Donald Trump and Ms Harris also have the same approval rating, at 47% each, in the latest CNN poll.

The poll surveyed 4,398 voters in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, questioning them online and by phone between Aug. 23 and Aug. 29. The margin of error is +/- 4.7 percentage points in Pennsylvania and Arizona, +/- 4.9 percentage points in Michigan and Nevada, and +/- 4.4 percentage points in Wisconsin.
