Some in the mainstream media are urging Democrats to continue calling former President Donald Trump a threat to democracy, even in the aftermath of two assassination attempts, including one in which the suspect repeated similar claims before plotting to kill the Republican candidate.
Less than a day after the second assassination attempt on Trump in West Palm Beach, a reporter from New York magazine Jonathan Chait “Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. That was true before the assassination attempt was thwarted on his golf course on Sunday, and that remains true afterwards,” he wrote.
“Supporting a liberal democracy requires recognizing the right to engage in lawful and peaceful activities while opposing violence and criminal activity. Trump does not support either side,” Chait added.
Piggybacking on Chait's article, MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart said Trump's criticism of Democrats was merely projection and that Democrats should continue to call Trump a grave threat to the country.
“Anything he accuses anyone of, if you dig a little bit you'll see he's guilty of it himself and is trying to duck it, to use his own words against him or to highlight them. New York Magazine is right and there's a reason Democrats point this out,” Capehart said.
“When he stands there and says, 'I want to punch that guy in the face. If anything happens to you, I'll pay your lawyer', what is that all about? From that little thing to inciting a riot in that building outside that window. He is the one who has been inciting violence. For Democrats to point that out, they are not inciting violence themselves, they are warning people, the American people. Democrats need to continue to do that,” he explained.

Ryan Routh, the second man charged with attempting to assassinate President Trump, posted multiple times on his X account about his support for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
“[Joe Biden,] “Your campaign should be named something like KADAF. Keep America Democratically Free. Trump should be MASA…Make Americans Masters Instead of Slaves Again. Democracy is on the ballot and we cannot lose. We cannot fail. The world is looking to us to show the way,” Routh posted in April.
