Polk County Arrest of Illegal Immigrant Leads to Injured Officer

A 21-year-old unauthorized immigrant, Dennis Collia Miranda, was apprehended in Polk County, Florida, on Tuesday following an incident where he allegedly assaulted a federal officer.

According to officials from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), an agent sustained a shoulder injury while attempting to detain Miranda in Lakeland. Sheriff Grady Judd commented during a press conference, noting, “This is the first time an agent has been injured on duty, and he has been seriously hurt.”

He emphasized that the financial burden of the situation falls on taxpayers in Florida and Polk County. “The state is required to provide him with legal representation, and it will also handle the prosecution,” he said.

After the altercation, Miranda fled into a nearby wooded area, prompting a full-scale search operation that included helicopters and drones. Eventually, law enforcement located him at a dock.

While Miranda was not armed, Judd explained that he resisted arrest out of fear of deportation, leading to his flight from authorities.

Miranda, originally from Nicaragua, had previously come to the attention of Border Patrol, which operates under the “catch and release” policy that often grants court dates to illegal immigrants.

He was arrested for DUI in 2024 but did not appear in court, leaving behind an unpaid warrant, Judd noted. This situation illustrates the flaws within the immigration system, with Judd declaring, “The system is broken. If they had handled him correctly back in 2021, this wouldn’t have happened.”

Currently, Miranda faces charges for assaulting federal officers and resisting arrest, and he could face deportation.

Additionally, it was revealed that he has connections to a robbery in Polk County, which may lead to further imprisonment. “Once he serves his time, he will be deported,” Judd said.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has not yet provided further commentary regarding the unfolding situation.
