The city of Denver recently considered hiring undocumented immigrants to save on costs related to social services, according to a new report.
by daily wireThe city was considering hiring some of the 40,000 undocumented immigrants, mostly from Venezuela, who arrived here last year. The motivation behind this plan was to save money on social services, as illegal immigrants often cannot find work and are a waste of taxpayer money. A city spokesperson told the outlet that a full-time city worker’s salary is “not necessarily” higher than what ostensibly covers basic needs like food and shelter.
However, a spokesperson told The Daily Wire that the city is not pursuing the idea further at this time because it would likely violate the law.
The news comes on the heels of a report by 9 News Denver journalist Mark Salinger, who said the city is putting some city employees on hours to help, including “coaches, lifeguards and front desk staff.” This suggests that there is a possibility of reducing it to “zero.” Offsetting the costs of the “immigration crisis”.
“But don’t call them fired…” Salinger joked in X.
The city had already announced earlier this month that it would eliminate or cut some public services to address budget shortfalls caused by immigration. Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston said flower beds won’t be planted this spring and Denver Department of Transportation offices will be closed for a rotating week and people won’t be able to register vehicles in person.
These and other cuts would save the city only “one-fortieth of the cost to the city of the influx of new entrants,” it said. Colorado Sun report.
The mayor sternly warned against blaming illegal immigrants, lest citizens and legal residents become frustrated with rising costs of living while job security and public services decline. “I want to make it clear to the people of Denver that the people who walked 3,000 miles to come to this city are not to blame for this crisis we’re in,” Johnson said in a speech on the street. Stated.
Instead, they blamed the federal government for the lack of funding. “You all did your part,” he told Denver residents. “The city will do our part. The federal government is not doing their part.”
Illegal immigrants are just one group creating a budget and safety crisis for Denver. The homeless population similarly skyrocketed last year, reaching nearly 9,000 people, many of whom live on the streets. As Blaze News previously reported, local businessman John Caldara said last September: “We have to clean up the vomit, urine, syringes, used condoms and feces that have contributed to Denver’s homeless problem. “We are not the ones responsible for the accident, but we do clean up afterward.” .
“This is not an affordable housing crisis. This is a drug crisis, a mental health crisis, and a legal crisis. You can’t get help.’ You’re forced to ask for some kind of help. ”
